As promised…

…I’m back 🙂

Of course it’s 10:41 p.m. here so I literally had an hour and 19 minutes left to make good on my promise but better late than never.

Here it goes: We’re back to fitspo for the day because I did a vegan grocery haul! YAY. I already put away all of the food and what not so I’m going to take a photo in the morning when I meal prep before work. I’m super excited because tomorrow I am starting the 21 Day Fix – finally. I’ve been wanting to try this for probably a good nine months to about a year now. If you don’t know what the 21 day fix is, here is a link to a webpage that explains what it is. I will go more in-depth tomorrow when I post about my first day on the plan and what I chose to eat. If you couldn’t already tell, I am choosing to complete this plan COMPLETELY vegan. Therefore you won’t see any meat, dairy or any other animal products in anything that I post during the next three weeks – not even honey.

I honestly wish that I would have gone ahead and started this a while back, but I’m choosing to do so now as I leave for Miami six weeks from tomorrow. (Yikes! It’s so close!) Due to the life changes that I’ve recently gone through as well as sheer laziness, I have gained back most of the weight that I lost earlier in the year which does suck BUT there is no time like the present to get back on track. I know I won’t lose a ton before my trip, but I just want to kick-start it because of course once I return from Miami I will still be continuing with my weight loss journey and just a healthy lifestyle journey in general.

All in all, I feel like things are finally coming together in my life and there will now be some consistency in all areas whether it’s my health, my finances or something else, and I am so beyond happy and grateful for that. 2017 really is my year. I can feel it. I’m following the steps of my 2017 Happiness Project and I can’t wait to get that posted for you guys. I know I’ve mentioned it at least once or twice, but THIS WEEK I will have it posted. Be on the lookout because it’ll be up no later than Saturday at 11:59 p.m. Haha.

Also today I took a long, hard look and my finances and man…*shakes head*

Being an adult SUCKS when it comes to money, but budgeting does help. I will be posting about my simple budgeting techniques soon as well because I declare that 2017 is the year that I get my financial house in order (you know, being that it’s my year and all). I have credit card debt, students loans to pay back, rent, phone bill, energy bill, YOU NAAAAAME IT (5 points if you get the reference lmfao)!

Soooooooo that is just a quick update of what I have coming up for you all for sure this time. The 2017 Happiness Project post will be up no later than Saturday night as to make it onto The Gems of Jas by the end of this week. I’m pretty sure my finance post will tie in with that one somehow some way as being financially stable is definitely a BIG part of some people’s happiness. At least I know it is for mine in particular. You will be getting information about what I’m eating and the workouts that I’m doing as was promised way back in one of my earlier posts. I am finally BACK and better than ever 🙂 With that being said, I am also beyond tired as I’ve been up since 8 a.m. It’s 11:12 p.m. now and I have to be up early to get a workout in before my dentist appointment which is right before work.

Goodnight my lovelies.

Weight Loss Kickoff On Superbowl Sunday

Happy Superbowl Sunday! We are a Packer/Patriots household so today is kind of exciting but at the same time it’s kind of like blah simply because I think we all would have rather seen the Packers in it. Well maybe just me. My dad still seems to be really excited. My mom is indifferent. My little sister isn’t here as she goes to school in Tennessee but as soon as she replies I’ll let you know how she’s feeling. 😉

I actually have a kickoff of my own as today is the official beginning of my journey to losing AT LEAST 30 lbs by April 13th which is in the middle of the second (full) week of April. My ideal goal weight for then would actually be 150 BUT that is unrealistic given the time frame. I chose April 13th because that is the day that my friends and I leave for Miami for my 23rd birthday trip. I am beyond excited and I believe that having those images of the sun and the sand and the gorgeous water in my head is the extra push I need to keep me on track.

Here’s the plan:

I’m going to keep track of my diet and exercise and post about them weekly. I will update my weight on a weekly basis and my measurements on a biweekly basis. I will post my workout calendar, recipes, water intake, etc. That will all be here for you all to track my progress right along with me as well as get ideas for different things you can incorporate into your everyday lives to stay healthy. In addition, I believe in being super transparent so you’re going to get the good, the bad and the ugly of this journey. Cheat meals and cheat days (if there are any) will be posted as well as lazy days if I happen to have of those as well. I am doing this to show that weight loss is not a straight path. Success in general is not always a straight path and it is easy to get discouraged when you have the idea that it is yet start to veer from the straight shot you had in mind. I will hopefully be able to get some progress photos up for you guys as well however only my front facing camera works properly on my phone right now, and I don’t plan on upgrading to the 7 until right before my trip. Therefore we’ll see what I’m able to do.

Another thing that I’d like to add is that a lot of my recipes will end up being plant-based because I am trying to transition to a mostly – if not fully – plant-based lifestyle by the end of the year. I will use vegan in reference to recipes but never in reference to myself because veganism is a lifestyle and while I know some people call themselves dietary vegans and what not I’m just going to stick to plant-based. If I ever do go fully vegan and stop buying leather goods and other items made from animals or animal by-products, then that is when I will use that term. I am already majority plant-based and cruelty free when it comes to personal items such a shampoo and what not but I don’t know if it will always be that way. I just want to put that out there before I get any possible vegan followers that might come for my throat (which would indeed be justified as no one likes to be misled) for misusing the term or not being transparent about my animal and animal by-product consumption. However, as I stated before, I WILL post vegan recipes a lot of the time.

I hope that summed up my plans for the fitspo portion of my blog and so without further ado, here are my starting measurements:

February 5, 2017

Weight: 193 lbs*

Measurements**: Bust – 45″, Chest – 36″, Waist – 35.5″, Hips – 48″, Midway – 44″, Thighs – 29″, Knees – 19″, Calves – 16.5″, Upper Arm – 13.25″, Forearm – 12.5″

I’m so excited to watch those numbers go down and I’m even more excited to be able to share it with anyone that might need a partner or a little inspiration to keep going. I have 8.5 weeks to hit my goal so let’s get started!

Song of the Day: You’re Not My Kind of Girl – New Edition***

Quote of the Day: “One day or day one. You decide.”

* If you read my first fitspo blog with the background of my weight you’d know that I was down to 190 from 207 but I had gotten lazy and gained six pounds back. So when I weighed myself today I was pleasantly surprised to see that I had lost three of those pounds again.
**I know that is a ton of measurements so if anyone else was going to track their weight loss this way as well you could do all of the measurements like I did, but you could get away with just the first four if you wanted to do that.
***I was already a fan of New Edition but the new mini series on BET has legit taken over my life and all of my thoughts with the music, the phenomenal cast and their amazing performances AND Algee Smith. Lmfao. He is everything. *insert heart eye emoji* SO that explains the song choice haha. If you haven’t seen the mini series then OMG you HAVE to go watch it. Like now. In the meantime, here is a link to the cast version of You’re Not My Kind of Girl. & Enjoy all of their #blackboyjoy in all of its glory in that interview 🙂

Fitspo? My health and weight loss journey.

Good afternoon Beautiful People! (It’s 12:43 pm where I’m at.)

There are a couple of things that I want to do with this blog once I get my theme and pages worked out with one of them being to track my health and weight loss with weigh-ins and photos, but I will be posting recipes and different workouts that I do as well for anyone that is interested. I want to do that just because when it comes to losing weight, it really is something that you have to do for yourself but with that being said it’s nice to know that someone is in it with you and to be able to see what other people are doing so that you can get ideas for yourself as well. Therefore I will try to post weekly about different things that I’m eating and exercises that I do both at home and at the gym.

A little background:

My weight has fluctuated my entire life with me being chubbier at some points and leaner at others. Before I started middle school I was on the rounder side, but my new school was in walking distance from my house so walking back and forth every single day caused me to lose a lot of weight. When I got into high school I was still a decent size at 5’2 and around 120 pounds and my weight pretty much stayed constant due to being a member of the varsity dance team because we worked out on a regular basis. Here are some pics for reference:

*These were all taken during my senior year. Top right is me in a typical 2012 “tongue out, bathroom mirror” pic. Top left is my sister and I (she would probably kill me if she knew I put that up. The bottom is a few of my friends and me in one of our dance outfits.

Fast forward to my freshman year of college: I was gaining weight quickly. Marquette gives its students an unlimited meal plan so you can pretty much eat anytime you want. Not to mention there were always events going on with free food and fast food within a 30 second walk from the door of my dorm. I was eating all the time. I was eating when I was studying, when I was bored, whenever there happened to be food near, etc. Eating became such a social event as well so that didn’t help my situation. Needless to say the pounds started to add up. So in case anyone was wondering the answer is yes – the “freshman 15” can be VERY real if you don’t monitor what you’re eating and if you don’t stay active in addition to the everyday stresses of being a freshman. And in case anyone isn’t familiar with the “freshman 15,” it simply means that on average students gain 15 pounds over the course of their first year in college. Here is a link to an article describing it and how to combat it and here’s pics from my freshman, sophomore, junior and senior years:

Senior year

Aside from being a student, my college experience was really rough starting my junior year due to various personal issues I had going on especially one in particular that I may one day make a post about. All of these things took a toll on my health and I was eating for comfort eventually and by the end of my senior year I was around 185 which stayed constant through the summer. This pic is from August 2016:

Then I went through a break up, the holidays rolled around and I shot up to 207 lbs.

When I stepped on the scale and saw that not only had I hit the 200 mark but that I had surpassed it, I knew something needed to change. I was shocked that I had allowed it to get to that point but more than that I was motivated. I knew that the lifestyle I was living was beyond unhealthy and that nothing was going to change until I did. So right before the new year started to change my habits. I began to eat less and I only ate until I was satisfied. I started to drink a lot more water as well. In addition I ate more of a plant-based diet. I was incorporating more fruits and vegetables and for around five days I had completely cut out meat and dairy. During this time which started at the end of December and went to the middle of January I lost a total of 17 lbs!

This brings us to present day. After I lost the 17 lbs I kept up with my healthy eating for a few more days, and then I began to get lazy as a ton of social events started to pop up at one time. Since then I have gained 6 lbs back, but I’m more motivated than ever to drop that weight and then some. Starting February 5th which is this coming Sunday, I will be blogging about my work outs, my food and my different mantras and routines that I have to keep me going. I will be posting a calendar with my goal weights at different intervals and the rewards for myself when I hit those marks. So stay tuned. I can’t wait to get to work because I love to challenge myself and I want to share this with anyone else that may be struggling to shed some pounds themselves.

Until next time!

xoxo – jas.
