December 4th, 2017 – Allow Me to Explain

I’m such a lying blogger. I don’t even know if I can really call myself a blogger. I haven’t remained consistent at all. I just read a bunch of my old posts where I claimed that I was going to post “soon” or even on a specific day. HA! The nerve of me. I don’t know if I have any loyal readers. I’m pretty sure I don’t since I post so rarely. If I do, then I’d just like to say that I really do apologize. I hate to let people down. I see it as a betrayal since you’ve put your trust/hope/whatever in me and I haven’t delivered. That is why I need to work harder at not letting myself down. I mean, if you’ll betray yourself then you’ll betray anyone.

But, please allow me to explain myself.

When I started this blog, I just knew that I had a lot that I wanted to put out there. I knew that there were things that I wanted to do and say. I knew that I wanted to lose weight and document that so that others could follow along with me in my journey and maybe get some motivation for themselves (if needed). I wanted to write about my thoughts, feelings, etc. I got so caught up in trying to produce a lot of quality content that I never really did. Until today, I had nine drafts all for completely different posts. They all started off promising (in my opinion at least) and then they just became a bunch of random ramblings. Actually, they weren’t random. But they were ramblings. They could have eventually gotten back to the main point and I’m sure would have, but they weren’t concise enough for me. The amount of detours my brain was taking takes (because let’s be honest, this hasn’t ceased) is RIDIC. My friend Cierra actually makes fun of me for it. I will have told you five different stories by the time I finish telling you the one that I intentionally started to tell you.

So, I was letting myself down. This really bothered me because ever since elementary school I have loved to read, but I have really loved to write. I was also told that I was a strong writer by all of my teachers. It could be a short story, a paper, etc. So naturally when I started to blog, I felt that things would just flow and I would be able to go back and make a few edits here and there.

That was ignorant. LOL.

This isn’t my first blog, but this is the one that I have been most active on. I’ve been able to crank out a few posts, but nothing like what I expected. Like I said, I have some promising drafts. But so many thoughts, ideas and feelings would come up every single time I was trying to write about ONE thing. It’s actually happening right now. I’m fighting myself to stay on topic. I keep scrolling back up to read the beginning of this, clenching my core and looking away to take a quick five second breather so that I can stay on task.

In other words — I’m a f*cking mess.

This revelation about myself poses a bigger problem than it may seem actually. That is why I am writing about it now. You see, I have recently embarked on a spiritual journey. Because of this, I’ve gotten way more in touch with myself than I’ve ever been (S/O to yoga, meditation and self reflection — I can’t wait to throw some crystals into the mix). Due to that, I’ve actually realized that what I really want to do is be a writer. I know that sounds like a joke because I can’t even keep up with blogging. I know, I know — I KNOW. It sounds crazy, I get it. However, it also helped me uncover why it is that I’m having such a problem with blogging: I have shied away from it due to my rambling and being scared that I will never be able to produce a well organized, fresh, entertaining piece of literature. Self doubt 101. Self doubt is why I’m not blogging because when I blog I can’t stay on track to save my life.

Ha. Well what do you know?

Fast forward to here and now: I have managed to stay on task with this post. That’s an achievement for me you guys. It’s a little step, but a step nonetheless. I’m hoping that by forcing myself to regularly blog, I can regulate organization within my mind. I know that writing can be messy, and before all is said and done, I’m going to go in a million and one different directions. But, I have an issue with making things connect so that is what I am trying to train myself to do.

So, I am going to be blogging more. For sure. I PROMISE. I’m not saying it’s going to be on a weekly basis. I’m not even going to say that I will have a set number out each month, but I am here. I am in this. I am PRESENT. That is something that I was having a really hard time with before, being present. That contributed to my ramblings and subsequently letting myself down. Through this, I am training myself with a goal to have my first book published by the time I hit 25.

Before I go, I would really like to emphasize the fact that I DO NOT find anything wrong with rambling. I feel that I haven’t put any real emphasis on that in this post and it actually may have come off like I think it’s bad. I don’t. I love it. It’s just like brain storming. What I was having an issue with was bringing everything together or — the opposite — separating it, and that was super frustrating. I either had the right idea, but couldn’t connect the points on paper the same way I could in my head without some long, drawn out post. OR, I had a million different ideas that connected in my head, but could have easily been separated into multiple posts that would have been much more organized. Yet, I was trying to make them all work like a psycho. #DoBetter

An Ode to Jasmine in All of Her Glory

I legitimately TORTURE myself with my thoughts. I go over, and over and OVER things a million times trying to understand them or take something from them that isn’t there to take. I’m doing that right now with some texts that I should delete. They’re texts that should not have happened. This person should not have texted me but more than that I should not have replied.

You want to know the funny thing about some people? When they have the chance to listen to you and do right by you they seem to fail no matter how many chances that they’re given. It is when you’ve finally had enough that they come around and try to appease you. But the gag is (in my Keke Palmer voice) – one day it is simply too late. Nothing can appease you. You have to appease yourself and let go of that situation and/or that person and let the universe deal with them but even better let IT have YOU. The other day was my day — the day I got these texts.

I know I should delete them because they are poisonous to the soul. Searching for something that you aren’t going to find is poisonous. It is torturous. It will drive you mad. Going over something a million times KNOWING that it is what it is but expecting something different in other words is the definition of insanity. It’s crazy, but when it comes to a situation like this you almost find comfort in the crazy. It is masochism in its simplest form.

However, this is the other gag: I’ve found something else in these messages that I didn’t expect to find anywhere anytime soon: strength. I’ve found the base that was missing from a voice that I just recently started using. I found the Aries in me that I’ve always felt I lacked even being born on April 3rd. I found it in me to not only let go of something but to let go of someone that has been around since I was 12 years old because it struck me that I could no longer let them suck so much of my joy away. I’ve given too much and have received nothing but empty promises, unanswered texts and a couple of broken hearts.

In this, I have found the road to ME in all of my glory. How poetic that the person that I felt I honestly couldn’t  live without whether as a friend or as something more showed me that I wasn’t living at all? How poetic, indeed.

So this, this is an ode to the girl that loves her friends and her family so much that she tears up thinking about it. This is an ode to the girl that has made a thousand mistakes but knows she is going to make a thousand more before its all said and done. This is an ode to the girl that has put herself down so many times before but has started to pick herself up because she realizes that no one else is going to. This is an ode to the girl that now knows that SHE herself has to be her biggest fan. This is an ode to the girl who thought she was NEVER going to make it through her senior year of college but did and is now applying to grad schools. This is an ode to the girl that has replaced her fears and doubts with confidence and willpower. This is an ode to the black girl magic that I so proudly practice. This is an ode to the girl that loves HARD but is learning to love herself even harder.

This is an ode to me.

February 10.

Hey to whoever is reading this and HAPPY FRIDAY!!!

In my last post I neglected to include that I started a new job at the beginning of this week, and it’s kind of intense at the moment because we’re training right now so my posts won’t really be frequent. I’m writing this one now because I realized I need to stay active with my posts because otherwise it’ll only be my weight loss updates once per week and that’s boring. Especially since this blog isn’t just about getting healthy.

With that being said, I really want to get the post about my 2017 happiness project up tonight or tomorrow. I would start it right now but I’m going to the movies to see the new Fifty Shades around midnight (it’s 10:36 here) and I don’t want to start writing about it because it means so much to me and I would rather have my attention on just that as opposed to writing and getting ready. Knowing me though I’ll probably end up writing the first few sentences anyway.

Oh, and in case anyone is wondering the job is going well. I mean I can only speak on the training but it’s cool. I really, REALLY like the people that I work with. The whole environment is really team oriented, everyone knows one another and management is truly in your corner. It’s definitely a great company where I believe I’ll be able to learn a lot and eventually bring those skills to my next position. The pay is really nice too so that’s a definite bonus.

Lastly, as I’ve said before I want to do a TON of things with this blog so please just bear with me and I promise you won’t be disappointed. 🙂

I’ll be back in a few hours to write my post and fill you in on the way my week went work wise and how that affected my diet.

xoxo – jas.

P.S. I really can’t wait until I start taking my own photos because these stock photos just do not capture the aura of my blog lolbvs *long sigh & rolled eyes*

Weight Loss Kickoff On Superbowl Sunday

Happy Superbowl Sunday! We are a Packer/Patriots household so today is kind of exciting but at the same time it’s kind of like blah simply because I think we all would have rather seen the Packers in it. Well maybe just me. My dad still seems to be really excited. My mom is indifferent. My little sister isn’t here as she goes to school in Tennessee but as soon as she replies I’ll let you know how she’s feeling. 😉

I actually have a kickoff of my own as today is the official beginning of my journey to losing AT LEAST 30 lbs by April 13th which is in the middle of the second (full) week of April. My ideal goal weight for then would actually be 150 BUT that is unrealistic given the time frame. I chose April 13th because that is the day that my friends and I leave for Miami for my 23rd birthday trip. I am beyond excited and I believe that having those images of the sun and the sand and the gorgeous water in my head is the extra push I need to keep me on track.

Here’s the plan:

I’m going to keep track of my diet and exercise and post about them weekly. I will update my weight on a weekly basis and my measurements on a biweekly basis. I will post my workout calendar, recipes, water intake, etc. That will all be here for you all to track my progress right along with me as well as get ideas for different things you can incorporate into your everyday lives to stay healthy. In addition, I believe in being super transparent so you’re going to get the good, the bad and the ugly of this journey. Cheat meals and cheat days (if there are any) will be posted as well as lazy days if I happen to have of those as well. I am doing this to show that weight loss is not a straight path. Success in general is not always a straight path and it is easy to get discouraged when you have the idea that it is yet start to veer from the straight shot you had in mind. I will hopefully be able to get some progress photos up for you guys as well however only my front facing camera works properly on my phone right now, and I don’t plan on upgrading to the 7 until right before my trip. Therefore we’ll see what I’m able to do.

Another thing that I’d like to add is that a lot of my recipes will end up being plant-based because I am trying to transition to a mostly – if not fully – plant-based lifestyle by the end of the year. I will use vegan in reference to recipes but never in reference to myself because veganism is a lifestyle and while I know some people call themselves dietary vegans and what not I’m just going to stick to plant-based. If I ever do go fully vegan and stop buying leather goods and other items made from animals or animal by-products, then that is when I will use that term. I am already majority plant-based and cruelty free when it comes to personal items such a shampoo and what not but I don’t know if it will always be that way. I just want to put that out there before I get any possible vegan followers that might come for my throat (which would indeed be justified as no one likes to be misled) for misusing the term or not being transparent about my animal and animal by-product consumption. However, as I stated before, I WILL post vegan recipes a lot of the time.

I hope that summed up my plans for the fitspo portion of my blog and so without further ado, here are my starting measurements:

February 5, 2017

Weight: 193 lbs*

Measurements**: Bust – 45″, Chest – 36″, Waist – 35.5″, Hips – 48″, Midway – 44″, Thighs – 29″, Knees – 19″, Calves – 16.5″, Upper Arm – 13.25″, Forearm – 12.5″

I’m so excited to watch those numbers go down and I’m even more excited to be able to share it with anyone that might need a partner or a little inspiration to keep going. I have 8.5 weeks to hit my goal so let’s get started!

Song of the Day: You’re Not My Kind of Girl – New Edition***

Quote of the Day: “One day or day one. You decide.”

* If you read my first fitspo blog with the background of my weight you’d know that I was down to 190 from 207 but I had gotten lazy and gained six pounds back. So when I weighed myself today I was pleasantly surprised to see that I had lost three of those pounds again.
**I know that is a ton of measurements so if anyone else was going to track their weight loss this way as well you could do all of the measurements like I did, but you could get away with just the first four if you wanted to do that.
***I was already a fan of New Edition but the new mini series on BET has legit taken over my life and all of my thoughts with the music, the phenomenal cast and their amazing performances AND Algee Smith. Lmfao. He is everything. *insert heart eye emoji* SO that explains the song choice haha. If you haven’t seen the mini series then OMG you HAVE to go watch it. Like now. In the meantime, here is a link to the cast version of You’re Not My Kind of Girl. & Enjoy all of their #blackboyjoy in all of its glory in that interview 🙂

Fitspo? My health and weight loss journey.

Good afternoon Beautiful People! (It’s 12:43 pm where I’m at.)

There are a couple of things that I want to do with this blog once I get my theme and pages worked out with one of them being to track my health and weight loss with weigh-ins and photos, but I will be posting recipes and different workouts that I do as well for anyone that is interested. I want to do that just because when it comes to losing weight, it really is something that you have to do for yourself but with that being said it’s nice to know that someone is in it with you and to be able to see what other people are doing so that you can get ideas for yourself as well. Therefore I will try to post weekly about different things that I’m eating and exercises that I do both at home and at the gym.

A little background:

My weight has fluctuated my entire life with me being chubbier at some points and leaner at others. Before I started middle school I was on the rounder side, but my new school was in walking distance from my house so walking back and forth every single day caused me to lose a lot of weight. When I got into high school I was still a decent size at 5’2 and around 120 pounds and my weight pretty much stayed constant due to being a member of the varsity dance team because we worked out on a regular basis. Here are some pics for reference:

*These were all taken during my senior year. Top right is me in a typical 2012 “tongue out, bathroom mirror” pic. Top left is my sister and I (she would probably kill me if she knew I put that up. The bottom is a few of my friends and me in one of our dance outfits.

Fast forward to my freshman year of college: I was gaining weight quickly. Marquette gives its students an unlimited meal plan so you can pretty much eat anytime you want. Not to mention there were always events going on with free food and fast food within a 30 second walk from the door of my dorm. I was eating all the time. I was eating when I was studying, when I was bored, whenever there happened to be food near, etc. Eating became such a social event as well so that didn’t help my situation. Needless to say the pounds started to add up. So in case anyone was wondering the answer is yes – the “freshman 15” can be VERY real if you don’t monitor what you’re eating and if you don’t stay active in addition to the everyday stresses of being a freshman. And in case anyone isn’t familiar with the “freshman 15,” it simply means that on average students gain 15 pounds over the course of their first year in college. Here is a link to an article describing it and how to combat it and here’s pics from my freshman, sophomore, junior and senior years:

Senior year

Aside from being a student, my college experience was really rough starting my junior year due to various personal issues I had going on especially one in particular that I may one day make a post about. All of these things took a toll on my health and I was eating for comfort eventually and by the end of my senior year I was around 185 which stayed constant through the summer. This pic is from August 2016:

Then I went through a break up, the holidays rolled around and I shot up to 207 lbs.

When I stepped on the scale and saw that not only had I hit the 200 mark but that I had surpassed it, I knew something needed to change. I was shocked that I had allowed it to get to that point but more than that I was motivated. I knew that the lifestyle I was living was beyond unhealthy and that nothing was going to change until I did. So right before the new year started to change my habits. I began to eat less and I only ate until I was satisfied. I started to drink a lot more water as well. In addition I ate more of a plant-based diet. I was incorporating more fruits and vegetables and for around five days I had completely cut out meat and dairy. During this time which started at the end of December and went to the middle of January I lost a total of 17 lbs!

This brings us to present day. After I lost the 17 lbs I kept up with my healthy eating for a few more days, and then I began to get lazy as a ton of social events started to pop up at one time. Since then I have gained 6 lbs back, but I’m more motivated than ever to drop that weight and then some. Starting February 5th which is this coming Sunday, I will be blogging about my work outs, my food and my different mantras and routines that I have to keep me going. I will be posting a calendar with my goal weights at different intervals and the rewards for myself when I hit those marks. So stay tuned. I can’t wait to get to work because I love to challenge myself and I want to share this with anyone else that may be struggling to shed some pounds themselves.

Until next time!

xoxo – jas.

February 2 Thoughts/Intro

It’s 9:29 pm on February 2nd of 2017 and I have a million things running through my mind. One of those things is my annoyance with myself for this being my first blog post due to the fact that I told myself that I was going to start blogging on January 1st. Lo and behold my procrastination got the best of me as it often does (I’m trying to break that habit) and here we are one month and one day later.

I just thought I’d introduce myself and tell anyone that’s reading this a little bit about me. My name is Jasmine hence the title of the blog, I’m 22 years old and I was born on April 3rd so I’m an Aries. I’m getting a lot more into astrology so I felt the need to mention that. *rolls eyes at myself* I’m a Wisconsin native. I have four biological siblings (four sisters and one brother – one of whom I share a birthday with) but my best friends have been my best friends for the longest and I consider them my family/siblings as well. I graduated from Marquette University in 2016 and while I was there I majored in public relations and minored in marketing. Currently I’m at a bit of a crossroads in my life regarding my career and my location and what not but as this blog grows my life will too and I’ll update when I figure out my next steps.

I love music. I used to play both the clarinet and the piano and when I was younger I really wanted to be a singer but that obviously never happened. I am a die-hard Drake fan but I listen to some of everybody from EVERY genre and I have more favorites as well. Elephants are my favorite animals for multiple reasons (I’m going to make a separate post about that). I am a GIANT bookworm. I love reading. I feel like it is one of the best, most entertaining and equally beneficial hobbies a person can have. It’s also a really great distraction. I’m more of an introvert, but I also love to turn up with the right crowd (my crowd) and tequila is my favorite liquor 🙂 The most important things in my life are my family and friends, becoming successful, my health and my overall happiness which brings me to my next topic:

2017 Happiness Project.

I am going to make a completely separate post about this because this is only supposed to be an intro to who I am but the project kind of has a lot to do with that and where I am in life which is why I wanted to mention it now. So I guess just stay tuned for that.

With that being said, I can’t wait to blog more and hopefully grow a little community through it.

Well, it’s 11:09 pm now. I paused multiple times while writing this simply because I get easily sidetracked (something I really need to work on). I also feel like this is super messy and all over the place but I feel like that reflects me as I am right now but I hope you learned a little something and I hope you stick around.

xoxo – jas.
